Margo: Maddie, did you hear me? You need to tell us who hurt you. Come on, Maddie, you've got to.

Maddie: I don't know. I can't remember.

Dallas: Maddie, which is it? You don't know or you don't remember?

Maddie: You're confusing me.

Margo: Well, then why don't you explain it to us. Tell us what you mean.

Maddie: I blanked out when it happened. I can't remember details.

Margo: But it did happen, that much is true?

Maddie: Maybe, maybe not. Maybe it didn't even happen at all!

Margo: Maddie, are you saying that you lied?

Maddie: I'm confused. You're confusing me.

Margo: Maddie, you tell me that you were raped at a frat party that never happened. You can't just say that you were confused.

Henry: You didn't lie, Maddie. You wouldn't lie about something like that. You wouldn't, would you?

Eve: Did you just make up the frat party? Why?

Louis: Maybe we should all stop shooting questions at her. Detective, I can't see that these tactics are getting you anywhere.

Margo: These are not tactics. And I'm not the one who needs to get somewhere. Now, I have all the sympathy in the world for anybody who has been raped. But Maddie, you tell me that you were at a frat party that never happened, so we know now that that much of your statement is untrue.

Maddie: I had to say something.

Margo: Why was that?

Maddie: Because of what I did to Lia's car. And then everyone was asking me what happened in Chicago -- and you had thought that I'd -- you know --

Margo: So you just went along with it?

Maddie: Yeah. Maybe. I don't know.

Dallas: Maddie, you're the only one that knows what happened. Okay, I was there. I saw how upset you were. You didn't look like you were making it up. You looked like someone that was terrified. Now what are you trying to do? Are you just trying to say you made it all up?

Maddie: I made it all up.

Henry: Oh, Maddie!

Eve: Oh, my god!

Margo: Maddie, we have got to be really, really clear here, because it is beginning to sound like you not only lied about being at the frat party, but you lied about being raped?

Henry: For god sakes, why?

Maddie: It's like everyone says -- my imagination just runs away with me. And, I don't know, when I get really stressed. And I'm really stressed right now. I'm sorry.

Eve: I don't believe this.

Henry: How could you let us believe something like this?

Margo: You know what, you know what? I believe at least some of what Maddie is saying. I believe that you are really stressed right now, right? And you can't quite keep things straight, can you?

Maddie: No.

Margo: I think that maybe there are too many people in this room. I think maybe that you feel you got too many people that you have to answer to.

Maddie: Maybe.

Margo: Yeah, and I think maybe it should be just you and me.

Louis: No!

Margo: No, no, it's okay. We've talked alone before. We're really good, talking alone, just the two of us.

Henry: She doesn't talk to the cops without her family or a lawyer present.

Eve: Yeah, look what you've done to her already!

Margo: I think we need to look at what she's done. I don't want to threaten you, baby, but you have to know that you are in serious trouble, right?

Maddie: I know.

Margo: Yeah, and I can't really be of any use to you if I walk out of here and I don't know exactly what did happen and what didn't happen.

Henry: Margo, Margo, Margo, she's worn out.

Louis: You're trying to railroad her.

Margo: Sir, if I was trying to railroad anybody, I would leave this room right now and I would let the interview stand on its own. That won't help her. And I want to help.

Maddie: She's right. Really, I think it's a good idea. I want to talk to Margo alone.

Margo: Okay, so, if we could just have some time.

Louis: Are you really sure we should leave this decision up to Maddie?

Henry: You heard what Margo said.

Louis: What she said could be construed as a threat.

Henry: Don't you think, after what we just found out, that we should do everything we can to get to the truth? Maddie, honey, this is what you want, isn't it?

Maddie: It's fine.

Margo: Good, good. Now, I have to talk to officer griffin for a minute, but just settle down, relax. I'm not going to go after you. We just need to talk.

Maddie: Right.

Margo: Right. Okay, so what's your take on this?

Dallas: That she lied about the party, obviously. But the rest? I don't know.

Margo: Henry.

Henry: Hi. I just have to ask -- do you really think that she -- she doesn't remember? Margo? Margo, I'm leaving you here with her, I'm trusting you. You don't buy that she doesn't remember, do you?

Margo: No. But sometimes the "I don't know" scenario is just the victim protecting someone. Someone she knows.

Henry: Someone she knows.

Margo: Yeah. Can you help me out here, Henry?

Louis: Did you think you were being smart, Maddie? Being clever?

Maddie: No.

Louis: Because up to now, you've been a pretty good girl. You're going to stay one, aren't you? Aren't you?

Maddie: Yeah.

Louis: What's private is private. Like what we have between us. You wouldn't want your brother or sister to get hurt, would you?

Maddie: No.

Louis: Good. I knew I could trust you.

Louis: Henry. I didn't know you were there.

Henry: I know.

Louis: I thought you and eve were going downstairs.

Henry: Well, we thought you were going down, too.

Louis: I just wanted a private word with Maddie.

Henry: Really?

Louis: Yeah, I just thought it was important that she knows that no matter what happens, whatever she tells Detective Hughes, that we'll all be there for her.

Henry: I never really understood what that meant. "There for you."

Louis: Well, I know that Maddie knows what I mean. Don't you? Shall we go downstairs? I'll buy you a drink.

Henry: Yeah, I'll join you in a minute. I need to have a private word with Maddie. Let her know that I'm there for her.

Louis: I wonder if there's any situation where you wouldn't make one of your jokes.

Henry: Is he right, Maddie? Do you know what he meant?

Maddie: I guess.

Henry: Yeah, I guess you knew. Do you want to tell me anything? I'm sure you've caught on to the fact that most people don't think my promises amount to much. But I can promise you this -- I will never let anything bad happen to you because you tell Margo the truth. I promise that.

Margo: Maddie, you ready?

Maddie: Yeah.

Henry: I love you, kid.

Maddie: I love you, too.

Margo: Okay, Maddie, it's time you told me the whole truth.

Margo: Okay, I don't want to scare you, but here's the bottom line. You are a viable suspect in a multiple homicide investigation. The stakes are incredibly high. Now, you told us that you were raped, and we have subsequently proven that at least some of that statement was untrue. Now, that in and of itself is a criminal offense. So Maddie, I wanted to get rid of everybody so that you could have a chance to tell me the truth. And I'm not stupid, honey. I know that there are a million and one reasons that you felt you had to lie. But I also know that there is a good explanation, and I need to hear that explanation now. And more than that, you need to give me that explanation, or else you suffer the consequences, deserved or not.

Maddie: I know.

Margo: I know this isn't easy for you. You take your time. But for your own sake, tell the me truth.

Maddie: There was no party. I lied.

Margo: You lied about the party. Did you lie about everything? You know what, Maddie, I've done this before. I've been around a lot of women who have been raped, and I know that they lie. They lie about the circumstances, the location, the details. They lie because they're trying to protect someone. Sometimes it's because it's the rapist they care about. Sometimes they're afraid of the rapist. You can understand that, can't you?

Maddie: Mm-hmm.

Margo: That's got to be some kind of hell. And the only way out of that hell is to tell the truth. You're a smart girl, Maddie. You know what I'm talking about. And I know you're scared, I know. I understand, believe me, I do. But like I said before, you're simply running out of time. Don't take the fall for this guy. You're too good for that.

Maddie: I know.

Margo: Good girl. You're going to be okay. You just trust me.

[ Maddie remembering ]

Louis: I knew I could trust you.

Margo: What, Maddie? What is it? What is it? Maddie?

Maddie: I can't talk about it.

Margo: Why can't you talk about it?

Maddie: I'm really tired.

[ Margo sighs ]

Margo: You're not going to let me in, you're not going to let me do this, are you?

Maddie: No. So can this be over now, please?

Margo: No. I mean, I can leave -- I can walk out of here -- baby, it's not going to be over until you tell somebody the truth.

Eve: If she's lying --

Louis: She was lying.

Eve: About being raped -- it's worse. It means there's something wrong with her, really wrong, to lie about that.

Louis: We will get her the help she needs. Finally.

Eve: What is that supposed to mean?

Louis: This isn't the first time I've said this. Maddie's problems aren't recent. It's just that now they're dramatic enough to get your attention.

Eve: Don't say that.

Louis: This could be a cry for help. Or maybe she simply can't help but lie.

Eve: You know, it's been long enough. I'm going up.

Louis: Eve. We need to be strong. We have to do whatever it takes to help her.

Eve: Of course.

Louis: I'm just worried. I'm worried that things are going to get worse. Cornered like this -- who knows what she's going to say next.

Eve: Look at you. You couldn't care more if she was your real sister. Henry, louis is really upset. You'll keep an eye on him, will you?

Henry: Yeah, I won't let him out of my sight.

Eve: Thanks.

Eve: Honey, if you can't talk to Margo, can you talk to me? I want to help you.

Maddie: Leave me alone. If you want to help me, just leave me alone. Please.

Eve: I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

Louis: Eve went up to see Maddie.

Henry: I know.

Louis: I'm scared. Scared she's going to start making up more lies.

Henry: Really?

Louis: She knows she's a suspect in the murders, she's liable to say anything.

Henry: Right. So we shouldn't believe anything she says. Even if she's actually telling the truth.

Louis: Huh? What are you getting at?

[ Henry remembering ]

Margo: Sometimes the "I don't know" scenario is the victim protecting someone. Someone she knows.

Louis: Henry -- what's wrong?

Henry: What's wrong is that I'm looking at the piece of dirt who raped my sister.
